It's late and I'm thinking about this.
I can narrate it now. Like, in real time. I'll notice I'm pulling back from someone and I'll think: oh, there it is, the distancing thing, I know what this is. And I do know what it is. Dr. K and I have spent a non-trivial number of hours on exactly this. I have the vocabulary. I can place it historically. I can tell you where twenty-three-year-old me learned that going cold was safer than staying present. I can do all of that.
What I'm less sure about is whether knowing the name of a thing and not doing the thing are the same skill. Because I'm noticing I'm doing it while I'm doing it, and I'm not stopping. I'm just — watching. With context. Which is maybe progress. Or it's just a more articulate version of the same guy who doesn't fully show up, except now he can explain himself after. I genuinely don't know which one it is. I've been sitting here for twenty minutes and I still don't know.
