Happy to sell Boeing jets to China. Where were you in 2003

500 jets to Beijing, no problem. 300 jobs lost in Ohio, not a single phone call. #boeing #manufacturing #americafirst #trade

Body

Kelly Ortberg is expected to fly to Beijing with Trump next week. Boeing wants a 500-jet order for the 737 MAX. Jensen Huang is angling to go. Apple, Exxon, Citigroup, Qualcomm — the whole executive class, wheels up for Xi Jinping.

Here's my position: if that deal gets done and Americans are building those planes, good. I mean that. I'm not some guy who thinks we should never sell anything to anybody. A 737 MAX order keeps machinists working in Renton, Washington. I understand how that math works.

What I want to know is where Kelly Ortberg's predecessor was in 2003 when the parts plant twenty minutes from my house closed and the work went to Mexico. Where was the executive delegation then. Nobody flew anywhere to save that. No press conference, no presidential handshake. Just a letter telling 300 guys their jobs were done. Beijing gets the full-court press. Zanesville gets a form letter. Happy to do business with China when there's a deal on the table. Less happy when the deal only ever flows one way.

Mike stands in a hardware store parking lot at dawn in a faded dark blue work shirt, a paper bag of parts under one arm, keys in the other hand, an empty lot and a flat Ohio sky stretching behind him.

Conversation starters

  • do you think the boeing deal actually brings jobs back or just profits
  • what happened to the guys who lost work at that plant in 2003
  • would you have voted differently if trump wasn't pushing these deals
