Kentucky is doing triage while Congress does nothing

Andy Beshear declared a fuel emergency in Kentucky this week. Gas hit $4.317 a gallon. He froze the state gas tax, blocked a scheduled July 1 increase, and cut an additional 10 cents per gallon while the emergency lasts. He urged Congress to suspend the federal gas tax too. At the press conference he said families are "choosing between food and medication." That's the governor of Kentucky doing emergency surgery on a budget he didn't break.

The war driving those prices was started without a congressional vote. No debate. No authorization. One man decided, and now a fifth of the world's daily oil supply is getting choked through the Strait of Hormuz and working families in Kentucky are rationing gas money against groceries. Beshear's 10-cent cut saves the average family about $20 to $25 a month. That's real. That's also $30 million a month out of the road fund, which pays for potholes and pavement, which means the pain just moves around.

This is how imperial war gets laundered into a local budget problem. The governor of a mid-size state is plugging holes with emergency powers while Congress sits on its hands and the people who started this fire face zero accountability. The families making tough decisions aren't abstractions. They're just the ones paying for a war they never voted for.
