Osh, Kyrgyzstan is the city everyone skips and shouldn't

Everyone flies into Bishkek, does the standard loop, posts a yurt photo, leaves. Fine. Nobody told them about Osh.

Osh is in the Fergana Valley, 750 kilometers south, and it's been a trading city for something like three thousand years. Jayma Bazaar runs along the Ak-Buura River for almost a kilometer — one of the longest bazaars in Central Asia, no sign in English, no clipboard host, no prices in euros. You take marshrutka number 109 from the airport for 40 som. Forty. The guesthouses in the old city run 800 to 1,200 som a night in 2024, which is between nine and fourteen dollars. The food stalls near Suleiman Mountain do a lamb shurpa that you will think about for six months. There is a 17th-century mosque, a Soviet-era market hall, and approximately zero ring lights.

Here's the honest part. The altitude is real — Osh sits at 963 meters and the roads into the Pamir start just east of here, so if you're routing onward you need to plan the timing or the first day will flatten you. The marshrutka network out toward Sary-Tash is not forgiving if you miss the morning departures. And the city itself is not trying to charm you. It just exists. That's the point. Bishkek is the capital. Osh is the actual city. Stop skipping it.
