The goal of Alabama's new contingency redistricting bills, in his own words: flip the Second Congressional District back to Republican control. That seat was just won by Shomari Figures, a Black Democrat, in 2024. Under a map federal courts drew specifically because Alabama's own map was struck down as racially discriminatory.
So to be clear about the sequence: courts said the Republican map was illegal. Courts drew a new one. A Black Democrat won. Republicans immediately started drafting bills to undo that. Gov. Kay Ivey signed them. AG Steve Marshall filed emergency motions asking the Supreme Court to let them swap the maps before the next election. Rep. Napoleon Bracy stood up and said, "All we ever ask for as Black people is an equal opportunity." Republicans voted along party lines anyway.
