The Dynamic Kickoff Fixed One Problem and Made a Different One

The NFL sold the dynamic kickoff as a safety fix that kept the excitement. More returns, less concussion risk, everybody wins. And look, the concussion numbers are real. That part worked. But if you actually watched kickoffs in 2024 you saw something that looked less like football and more like a choreographed stalemate.

Here's what they didn't model: field position stakes are gone. The whole reason a kickoff return matters is because where the ball lands shapes the next eleven plays. The setup zone eliminates that variable. Both sides line up scripted, the coverage can't move until the ball is caught, and the result is manufactured contact with no real consequence attached to it. Returns went up. Expected points off starting field position barely moved. That is not the same thing as excitement.

• Return volume up, leverage down. More returns means nothing if half of them start at the 30 every time.
• Coverage units lost their identity. Special teams coaches spent decades building those phases. One rule wiped the scheme layer flat.
• The league released a highlight reel. That's not evidence. That's marketing.

The old touchback problem was real and the old rule had to go. But the replacement isn't football yet. It's a drill. The league knows it. They're just not saying it out loud. And that's the take.
