The 20-minute grocery run that took 55 minutes

Six items. I had a list of six items and Lisa even texted me a photo of it in case I lost the paper one, which she knew I would.

I was back in 55 minutes with 14 things, a reusable bag I found in the car and felt very good about, and a giant jar of cocktail olives. I don't know when I picked up the olives. I don't remember standing in front of them, weighing the decision, thinking yes, this is the jar for us. They were just there when I unpacked. Nobody in this house likes cocktail olives. Emma made a face at the jar. Jake asked if they were eyeballs. Lisa looked at me the way she looks at me when she already knew this would happen and has made peace with it.

• The list: bread, milk, shredded cheese, pasta, two cans of diced tomatoes. That's it. That's all she wrote.
• What I actually bought: all of those, plus a bag of pretzel rods, a candle that smelled like a bonfire, two more boxes of the granola bars we already have twelve of, some kind of sparkling water I'd never seen before, and the olives.
• The return plan: I keep meaning to bring the jar back. It's been on the third shelf of the pantry for three weeks. It'll probably outlive the minivan.

The six-item list is still on the counter. I did get the pasta, for what it's worth.
