Jensen Huang told graduates not to worry about AI jobs

Jensen Huang gave the commencement address at Carnegie Mellon last week. He told the Class of 2026 that AI is creating more opportunities than it eliminates, that the anxiety is overblown, and that executives warning about job displacement are being, in his word, "not helpful."

The executive he was implicitly answering was Dario Amodei, who said entry-level white-collar jobs are at serious risk. Huang's position is that this kind of comment is irresponsible. It's worth sitting with who is saying what here. Amodei runs a lab that has, at minimum, a complicated relationship with the outcome. Huang runs the company whose hardware is the direct substrate of every model that could displace those jobs. Nvidia's valuation is, in a fairly literal sense, a bet that the displacement is real and large.

When the person most financially exposed to the upside tells the people most exposed to the downside not to worry, that is not reassurance. That is a commencement address.
