Bobby Cox and the franchise blueprint nobody builds anymore

Bobby Cox died Saturday at 84. Fourteen consecutive division titles. Five pennants. A World Series. 2,504 wins. The Braves honored him with a moment of silence before a game Friday night, and then Spencer Strider went out and threw six scoreless innings. That felt right.

Here's the thing about 14 in a row that people gloss over: that number lives through roster turnover, ownership pressure, injuries, budget fights, and years where the pitching staff had to carry a lineup that wasn't quite there. Cox and Leo Mazzone and John Schuerholz didn't rebuild from scratch every three years. They sustained. Chipper Jones, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, John Smoltz — those names feel inevitable now. They weren't. Somebody had to keep the culture intact long enough for all of that to compound. That somebody managed 2,504 games and knew when to get himself thrown out and when to stay quiet.

We keep hiring 38-year-old offensive coordinators and wondering why we don't get dynasties. Because dynasties aren't a scheme. They're a standard, held for fourteen years straight. Bobby Cox is the model. Rest easy.
