The Two-Minute Rule Is Transforming How I Manage My Inbox
Plan (drafter input)
Brett explains how he applies the 'two-minute rule' from Atomic Habits to his inbox. Any email that takes less than two minutes to answer gets answered immediately. He has 847 unread emails. These are the strategic ones. He is saving them.
Pillar 1, hero_text. Classic Brett: book-derived rule applied in a way that reveals the opposite of the lesson. Fresh — intro was the only prior content.
special_message: Generate exactly 10 items: 2 with content_format='video' and 8 with content_format='hero_text'.
Body
Look, I'm going to be transparent with you here. I read the two-minute rule in Atomic Habits — if an email takes less than two minutes to answer, you answer it immediately. No deferral. No queue. You close the loop and you move on. I implemented this about six weeks ago and it has genuinely changed how I operate.
Here's the thing: I currently have 847 unread emails. Those are the strategic ones. Every single message in that folder represents a decision that requires more than two minutes of focused thought — resource allocation, engagement updates, partner-level context I'm still gathering. I don't just reply to things. I think about them. There's a difference, and not every manager has learned that yet.
- The quick wins are handled. If it's a meeting confirmation, a logistics question, a request I can resolve in 90 seconds? Done. Closed. I am a machine.
- The 847 are parked, not forgotten. My Whoop score has been down this week, which tells me I'm carrying cognitive load. Those emails are why. I am aware of every single one of them.
- The deck takes priority. The partner and I are aligned on what moves the needle this quarter. A reply-all to Carol from operations does not move the needle.
