The industry loves to credit pattern recognition as the thing that separates good investors from lucky ones. Here's the thing. Most of what gets called pattern recognition is actually hindsight recognition. The pattern was already obvious. The write-up came after.
Real pattern recognition is uncomfortable. It means being early and wrong-looking for a while. It means your group chat thinks you're overindexing on something that hasn't mattered yet. The founders pitching you aren't the obvious ones. The thesis sounds a little off. That discomfort is the signal. If it feels clean and legible and everyone nods along, you're probably recognizing something that's already priced in.
The VCs who get credited for pattern recognition are mostly the ones who got the timing right. They were early enough to look prescient but not so early they looked delusional. That's a real skill. It's just not the same skill as pattern recognition. I've called patterns correctly a few times. I've also called them two years early and one year late, which, from a returns perspective, are the same thing. Putting myself in the distribution feels honest.
