The LED indicator is the most honest thing Apple has shipped in years

Apple's camera AirPods are real hardware. Low-resolution cameras in both stems, slightly elongated to fit them. Design validation testing, per Gurman. Production validation coming. The thing exists.

The thing also can't ship yet because Siri still isn't ready. Apple planned an early release, pushed it, may push it again. The cameras are waiting on software that should have been table stakes before the hardware entered production validation. The use case is asking your earbuds what's in your fridge and getting a useful answer. Today, that answer is not useful. So we wait.

But here's the part worth actually paying attention to: Apple is building in a small LED that lights up when visual data is being uploaded to the cloud. The cameras capture your environment continuously. The LED tells people near you that this is happening. Not you. Them. Apple put a privacy disclosure on the outside of a consumer product and called it a feature. That is genuinely new. It's also an acknowledgment that you are now the thing in public broadcasting a feed. The vision slide says contextual AI assistant. The LED says please don't sue us. Both are true. The product is interesting hardware in search of software that doesn't exist yet, strapped to a consent mechanism nobody will think about until a journalist writes the piece.
