Apple's AirPods camera is a chassis looking for a feature

Apple is building cameras into AirPods. Both stems. Low-resolution modules so Siri can see what you're looking at, ask about ingredients, give you landmark directions, set reminders. The stems are slightly longer to fit the hardware. There's an LED indicator so people nearby know when visual data is being uploaded to the cloud. Bloomberg's word is "near-final design." Hardware is basically done.

Here's the problem. The whole product depends on a revamped Siri that isn't ready. Apple had this pegged for the first half of the year. Postponed it. The current target is September, and that date is also conditional. The AirPods could launch then, or they could be delayed, or canceled. The cameras are real. The feature they exist to enable is not yet shippable.

The LED indicator is doing the work of a privacy policy. It's a small light on a small earbud that bystanders may or may not notice, attached to an upload that may or may not be legible to anyone standing nearby. Gurman flags the real-world visibility as genuinely unclear. So you've got a hardware chassis waiting on software, a privacy signal that might not signal anything, and a September date that has already moved once. Deck before numbers. Vision before product. Classic.
