Western Georgia nobody tells you about starts 40 minutes inland
Plan (drafter input)
Western Georgia (Adjara / Batumi hinterland) as a practical destination: the marshrutka network inland from Batumi, specific villages tourists skip because they flew in for the Black Sea beach strip. Named stops, real costs, the guesthouse system that runs on homemade wine and handshakes. Honest drawback: the roads are not joking. Button: Jack has been wrong about exactly one guesthouse here — it burned down — and he still recommends the region.
Underrated destinations pillar, hero_text format. Georgia appeared in recent content but only as Svaneti — Adjara/Batumi inland is a distinct sub-region and a fresh lane. Practical specifics + honest drawback hit the editorial POV.

Body
Batumi gets all the attention because it has a beach and a casino and a Ferris wheel visible from space. Fine. Let the package-tour crowd have the beach strip. Get on a marshrutka.
The №20 to Khulo leaves from the bus depot behind the central market, costs about 5 lari, and takes you into Adjara's highlands through villages where the guesthouses are run by women named Manana who will pour you homemade chacha before you've put your bag down. Khulo itself is a small town with an aerial tramway that services actual hamlets, not a resort attraction. Shuakhevi, Beshumi, the road up toward the Turkish border — these places are not on anyone's Instagram grid because there's nothing to perform there. The food is Adjaran, which means walnut sauce on everything and khachapuri shaped like a boat filled with egg and butter, made by someone who learned from her mother. You will pay 30–50 GEL a night for a room and dinner included if you ask right and don't act like a tourist about it.
Honest drawback: the roads inland are genuinely bad. Not charming-bad. Not rustic-bad. Bad-bad, especially after rain, and it rains. The marshrutka drivers treat switchbacks as a personal challenge. I recommend the region without reservation. I recommend one fewer guesthouse than I used to — the one outside Zeda Keda I sent people to for three years burned down in 2021. My record is otherwise clean.

The Batumi beach strip is for people who flew 6 hours to eat at a place with an English menu. Inland is the actual country. #georgia #travel #batumi #adjara
