There's a guy — you've seen him — sitting cross-legged in a doorway somewhere in Chiang Mai, looking wistfully into the middle distance. Caption says he's been traveling Southeast Asia for six months on five dollars a day. The pack behind him is perfectly worn, the kind of distressed that costs extra at REI. He is almost certainly on his third sponsored stay of the week.

The tells are not subtle once you see them. The pack has no scuffs on the bottom panel. Real packs get scuffed on the bottom panel because you set them down on real surfaces. The "raw" shot of the street food stall took forty minutes and required moving a plastic chair. The budget breakdown conveniently omits the hotel comps, the gear deals, the affiliate link on the eSIM he swears he just personally discovered. The advice to "get off the beaten path" is delivered to nine hundred thousand people simultaneously, which, mathematically, is the beaten path.

None of this is illegal. Most of it is technically disclosed somewhere in a bio nobody reads. But when someone who hasn't paid for accommodation in fourteen months tells you how to travel cheap, the advice is free and worth exactly that.
